Namibian Myrrh
What is Namibian Myrrh?
Namibian myrrh is a natural, aromatic resin extracted from Commiphora trees that commonly grow in Namibia, Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia. When the tree is wounded, it ‘bleeds’ this sap-like resin. It is then harvested and processed into essential oil. Myrrh resin has been used for at least 5,000 years by the Himba people of Namibia as a perfume, incense and to protect their skin from the sun. It is also used traditionally as a medicine to heal wounds and prevent infections due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties.
Why use Namibian Myrrh?
Myrrh essential oil remains important for cosmetic use today because of its cleansing, brightening, soothing and rejuvenating properties.
Myrrh is beneficial in cosmetic use because:
- It is a powerful antioxidant that fights aging and helps to fade unwanted skin blemishes.
- It is soothing and helps eliminate itchiness and symptoms of eczema, and lessen bruising and sunburn.
- Its antibacterial properties mean its effective treatment for rashes and other skin inflammations.
- It works as an astringent, reducing and preventing hair loss, and addressing dandruff.
- It is an anti-inflammatory, which prevents toxins from building up in the circulatory system.
How can you benefit from Namibian Myrrh?
Aging skin – the powerful antioxidant properties in myrrh oil, means it fights the free radicals that damage our cells and lead to, among other things, premature wrinkles. It maintains skin health by minimising the appearance of blemishes, sunspots and existing fine lines. It also prevents new ones from forming.
Dry skin – myrrh essential oil treats skin conditions, such as eczema, that lead to dry, chapped, itchy skin. Dry skin is one of the major causes of skin aging and myrrh essential oil elevates the white blood cells in the skin which combat issues arising from disease and environmental factors.
Sensitive skin – because of its antibacterial properties, myrrh oil alleviates redness and swelling from rashes and other skin inflammations. This soothes and beautifies the skin, and allows the regular turnover of skin cells to occur.
Dull skin – myrrh’s anti-inflammatory properties prevent bodily toxins, such as excess water, harmful gases and salt, from accumulating in the circulatory system. Increased circulation leads to brighter, firmer, healthier skin by increasing perspiration, which opens up pores, and by increasing blood flow and oxygen to our skin.
Hair loss and dandruff – myrrh oil is an astringent and its use strengthens the roots of the hair and reduces, or even prevents, hair loss. If applied to the scalp, it penetrates and moisturises preventing dandruff and dry scalp and its scent is known to stimulate the brain and promote alertness.
